A brief history of Patrick Pearse GAC
Pearses was founded as Cumann an Phiarsaigh, Patrick Pearse Gaelic Athletic Club in 1951 around the North Queen Street area of Belfast and in the begining only under age teams were catered for, but success was just around the corner.
In 1954 Pearses won the minor football championship and the strong under-age policy saw them take the same trophy twice more in the first decade of their existence in 1957 and 1959. It was inevitable that such a strong juvenile structure would eventually yield success at adult level and the 1960's saw Pearses emerge as a potent force, taking the Junior football title in 1961.
Now in senior Competition for the first time, Pearses were to make the county final in 1962, 1964 and 1967 before finally taking the trophy in 1968 when they were crowned Antrim senior football champions. Pearses were back in the final in 1969 losing out to St Johns and although they won the Intermediate championship in 1974 the North Belfast men have never reached the same heights since.
The 90's saw a period of decline for Pearses and infact they were forced to withdraw from League competition for a time, but thankfully they are back and the strong youth policy which still exists will see them back at the top level in the future.
